There are so many ways a system can experience major failure - hardware failure, bad update, zapped by lightning, and the list goes on and on - and the only thing close to insurance against any of them is having a full system image one can restore from along with the user data backup if any significant amount of new files have been generated since the last full system image backup. This is why having an external backup drive and a backup protocol where you take routine, cyclic full system image backups as well as separate user data backups (and Windows 10 File History is great for this, provided you turn off the retention period of "forever") is absolutely vital. Not meaning to pour salt in an open wound, but this is a teachable moment. You're beyond the 10 days where that would be an option. Upon further research, at least under Version 1909, the Go back to the previous version of Windows 10 option is available for 10 days and is in the Recovery Pane of Update & Security Settings.
